College Revisited

The other day my husband, who is working part-time on finishing his bachelor's degree, had to go down to campus to take a test for a class that is mostly online. I graduated from the same school in 2004, and haven't been down to campus in ages, so I went with him.

While my husband was taking his test, I hung out in the student lounge and worked on my laptop. All of the lounges on campus have wireless Internet access now, which is really cool — that was just starting to become the case during my senior year. It was quite a good feeling to sit there and work on my computer again after being out of college for so long. I kind of miss those days sometimes.

Anyway, while I was there I was thinking about how my mom — who is a librarian at a nearby community college — said enrollment has gone up since the economy has been struggling. Apparently a lot of people think it's a good time to get an education, rather than fighting to stay employed in the current job market. For instance, more people are pursuing companion homemaker training programs; and especially with the large Spanish-speaking population in our area, Spanish caregiver resources are often requested in the library.

I guess it's not a bad plan — if you are having a hard time finding a job, you might as well use the time more productively and better your chances of finding one when the economy improves!
